A Letter from the Chairman

I am pleased to welcome you to the web site for the Fort Monroe Federal Development Area (FMFADA). We hope that you will visit it often and contact our office with your suggestions and concerns.

The FMFADA was created by act of the Virginia General Assembly in 2007 and is charged with the creation of a reuse plan for Fort Monroe, a National Historic Landmark District scheduled for closure by the Army in 2011. The closure of Fort Monroe is being handled according to procedures defined by the federal Base Realignment and Closure Act.

Our 18-member board consists of seven representatives appointed by Governor Timothy M. Kaine, seven named by the Hampton City Council, and four elected officials — two delegates and two senators – appointed by the General Assembly. There are five cabinet-level secretaries, professionals in historic preservation and heritage tourism, and a select group of outstanding citizens from Hampton. Information about the board and our contact information is included on this site.

Fort Monroe has had a military function for most of the past 400 years. Much of the land and structures at Fort Monroe will revert to the Commonwealth after the Army leaves. Creating a workable plan for the 570-acre site is the challenge that the FMFADA must address in its work. Our efforts are guided by three priorities outlined by the Governor:

  • Respect Fort Monroe's historic assets
  • Provide public access
  • Achieve economic sustainability

We conduct our business in an open forum. Notices of meetings will be posted on this site, which also includes links to other agencies that are pertinent to our planning.

We are grateful to the Army for providing space for our headquarters and wish to thank the Garrison Commander and his staff for their outstanding cooperation. In the final analysis, Fort Monroe belongs to the American people and the generations to come who will benefit from the cultural and natural resources embedded in this beautiful site.

Sincerely,

L. Preston Bryant, Jr.
Chairman, Fort Monroe Federal Area Development Authority
and Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources
