$54 Million Renovation Brings The Chamberlin Back to Life as Luxury Senior Living Community

Hampton, VA (News Release) -- The Chamberlin, formerly the historic Chamberlin Hotel at Fort Monroe, is currently undergoing a $54-million renovation as it transitions into a luxury senior rental community. Scheduled to open in June 2008, this is one of the largest historic investment tax credit projects in Virginia's history.

The Chamberlin is being historically restored, preserving the charm that made it a premier resort destination for civilians and high-ranking military officials for close to a century; however, the building is being completely reconditioned to include new HVAC systems, electricity and plumbing throughout.

"We are bringing The Chamberlin's historical elegance back to life, but for residential living, it will be like a brand new building," says Sue Moniak, The Chamberlin's Executive Director. "The atmosphere we're creating will be very lively, social and exclusive to a select group of residents - similar to the way The Chamberlin Hotel operated in its "Glory Days".

The majority of the 133 suites will be one- and two-bedroom apartment homes, featuring 20-foot ceilings, premium appliances and finishes, and panoramic views of the Chesapeake Bay. Rents start at $2,900 per month and include one meal per day, transportation, housekeeping services, utilities, phone, cable, internet connections and much more.

The community will feature multiple dining and retail options, ongoing events, a fitness area with an indoor pool and a wellness center. A $23-million reconstruction of the seawall will provide a waterside walking trail for residents along the Chesapeake Bay.

Some of the historic features currently being restored include the flooring, tile and crown molding in The Chamberlin's famous Grand Lobby and Dining Room, as well as the indoor swimming pool area. The Chamberlin's original grand piano, which has been renovated, will act as the lobby's centerpiece.

Other noteworthy elements of The Chamberlin's restoration include the Officer's Club, a gathering place for residents featuring billiards and a bar/lounge area, as well as the Poe Library, where Edgar Allen Poe is believed to have recited his famous poem Annabel Lee.

Interested residents are encouraged to contact The Chamberlin's leasing office to become part of the Priority List. These individuals will be first to select specific suites and parking spaces, becoming Charter Members with added membership benefits.

"We realize the importance of community support and are making a conscious effort to make this property available first to Hampton Roads residents," says Wendy Drucker of Drucker and Falk, LLC, the real estate firm that negotiated the purchase of the building in 2004 and is overseeing its redevelopment, operations and management. "We are very excited to unveil this historic landmark to the area's senior residents as a place to live and socialize."
